Call me crazy, but I think it would be neat if iJournal, when you selected the Pic you wanna use, that the pic would either come up briefly or appear somewhere. Now, I know the window, as it stands right now is kinda hard-pressed for space, and it might just be the Mountain Dew: Code Red talking, but I think little things like that are kinda cool.

Don't flame me. I'm very bored and hyper from MicroType Pro (keyboarding class) and Code Red.

I'm not sure if it's possible to easily get a user's userpics via the client protocol.

Doesn't mean you can't prune it from the HTML if you particularly wanted to, look at Watson.

That's not exactly the most kosher (and LJ-friendly) method to do things. It certainly wouldn't make the sysadmins happy, seeing as most of LJ's bandwidth is taken up by userpics.

Journalert does it... I think if it pulled a list and cached the images by the name it wouldn't use much bandwidth at all.

That's what caching is for, you obviously wouldn't want to download them every time.
